How to Wear a Monochromatic Outfit

“Texture is something we forget - it makes outfits look very expensive. You can do a monochromatic outfit, if you're afraid of things that are more colorful and printed, and still create interest.” – Stacy London

Before I dive into how to wear a monochromatic outfit, let me tell you what “monochromatic” means. Basically “mono” means one and “chromatic” means color. Simple enough right? So now let’s talk about the monochromatic trend. When you wear a monochromatic outfit, you choose one color and build an outfit based on that. This trend allows you to fully indulge in different shades of one color which makes a very chic, polished, and clean outfit.

If you are afraid to wear different colors all at once, the monochromatic trend will provide a safety net for you every time. You cannot go wrong with choosing one color found in different shades and running wild with the outfit you decide to create. However, I would be careful with wearing different shades of black because one shade may appear to be brown thus meaning it is not black anymore and your outfit wouldn’t be considered as monochromatic.

Also, if you are afraid to wear prints and patterns, a monochromatic look will be sufficient for you as it consists of different shades of one solid color. You should definitely include this trend in your wardrobe. It’s a trend that has so many benefits I don’t see why you wouldn’t lol.

In the fall and winter seasons, monochromatic outfits seem to appear more frequently especially with outfits requiring different layers of clothing to keep warm. I hate being cold and I am anemic so I am all for layering up! In my most recent shopping trip, I found a long tan coat in H&M ($70), tan cowl neck sweater ($23) and knit pencil skirt ($18) in Banana Republic. Ironically, I found all 3 pieces in the same day but since they are neutral colors, I didn’t have any trouble finding them. This outfit is my favorite fall outfit thus far!

I hope I have encouraged you to try the monochromatic trend and have fun building an outfit with texture!
